Protecting Your Hair from Chlorine

Now that warm weather is finally upon us, we’re swapping our scarves for our towels and our boots for our bathing suits. Spending time in the pool is a great way to unwind with friends and family. The one downside? The damaging effects that chlorine has on your hair. Our beauty school in Chicago wants this summer to be your hair’s healthiest yet! Follow these tips to keep your hair protected in the summer and beyond.

Use Olive Oil or Coconut Oil

Before getting into the pool, try coating your hair with a layer of olive oil or coconut oil. This way, these natural oils will be the main liquid in contact with your hair, acting as a barrier between your hair and the chlorine. These oils won’t weigh your hair down and can even help strengthen your strands.

Pre-Soak with Regular Water

Scientifically, wet hair is less absorbent than dry hair, making it a good idea to get your hair wet with non-chlorinated water before getting into the pool. This will reduce your hair’s risk of absorbing the damaging chemicals that chlorine has. This same reasoning holds true for your skin as well!

Use a Swimming Cap

If you don’t want to put an excessive amount of product in your hair, try getting a swimming cap that you can reuse all summer long. This way, your hair won’t have any exposure to chlorine.

Tell our beauty school in Chicago your favorite tips and tricks for protecting your hair from chlorine!
