Frequently Asked Questions About Cosmetology Education

Q: How much time is required to receive a license?

A: For the state of Illinois, it is required that your cosmetology education consists of 1500 hours in order to receive your Illinois Beauty Culture License. These hours are broken down into basic training, practical chemical application/hair treatment, hair styling/hair dressing, shop management sanitation and interpersonal relation, and nail technology.

Q: How hands-on is it?

A: Very! Be prepared to jump right in. We believe the best way to learn is by doing, especially in a career like cosmetology. Yes, there are moments of learning that take place seated while in a classroom, but expect most of your time learning to come from in-salon experience.

Q: What’s the time commitment like after receiving a license?

A: Don’t expect a typical 9-5 working schedule. Flexibility is key in order to succeed, and the more work you put in, the more you’ll get out of your career.
